About

Hello Friend,

Thank you for visiting my blog! I founded What Horses Teach in 2013 as a space for reflection on horses, riding, teaching and the field of Equine Assisted Activities & Therapies (EAAT). I am lifelong horse person and, like many, I believe that living a "horse-informed" life has made me a more fully-engaged human being. (Read about my fundamental beliefs about horses and horsemanship!)

I am certified as an Advanced Instructor, Mentor and Associate Evaluator through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.) and have affiliated with multiple PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Centers, among them Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding, High Hopes Therapeutic Riding, Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center and Manes & Motions Therapeutic Riding. I remain passionate about the positive effects that time spent riding and working with horses can have on the lives of individuals with diverse special needs and have a particular affinity for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Part of what I love about working in the field of EAAT is what feels like the endless possibility to learn. What Horses Teach ebbs and flows with my interests. I connect with horses and learn from their very presence. I am committed to meeting the challenges that a career in this field can sometimes offer and have therefore found myself exploring how to live my best life - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Horses and improving my horsemanship remain a primary motivator in this quest. Other pursuits - writing, reading, yoga, pedagogy, improved nutrition - have influenced me as well and therefore become blog topics.

I hope that this blog will be a source of information for the field of EAAT, but also and maybe more importantly, a place of inspiration for aspiring or current EAAT professionals. I love you for your desire to serve humanity with horses to the best of your ability and for wanting to do so in the way that is cognizant and respectful of the horse's essential nature.

Thank you again for reading!

Karen
